The ocean is a treasure trove of very rich biological resources and untapped energy resources, and it plays an important economic role as a route for producing food (demand for which will increase in the future) and transporting goods. Ocean-related industries are centered on a variety of industries. With the increasing globalization of the maritime industry, it has become even more important to promote the sustainable development and use of the oceans on a global scale. There is a need for China, Japan, Korea and ASEAN countries (with their vast oceans) to address common issues through mutual understanding and close cooperation, as well as in the broader economic arena. Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while fostering senior professionals who can strategically address issues in the area of sustainable development and ocean use for the next generation and the development of such talent is an important task shared by all schools and institutions of higher education in marine sciences.

This project will build on the successful OQEANOUS project constructed in the second phase of the Asia Campus Project, and expand its scope and programs to include the importance of ASEAN countries as maritime nations. This project will aim to cultivate high-level professionals and address strategic issues for achieving sustainable development goals through the joint efforts of China, Japan, Korea and ASEAN.
