Launching Ceremony of CAMPUS Asia Mode 3 and the First Meeting of Consortium Steering Committee Kicked Off

On March 24, Shandong University (China), Nagasaki University (Japan), Sungkyunkwan University (the Republic of Korea [ROK]), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and National University of Laos (Laos) jointly launched the “Asia Intercollegiate Cooperative Project for Nurturing Global Leaders in Sustainable Infrastructure Development” of “CAMPUS Asia” Mode 3 and held the first meeting of the Consortium Steering Committee. HAN Shenghao, Vice President of Shandong University, virtually attended and addressed the occasion.

At the meeting, HAN Shenghao revisited the achievements made by Shandong University, Nagasaki University, and Sungkyunkwan University in the intercollegiatetraining ofhigh-end international talents since CAMPUS Asia Mode 2.

He said that the three universities have not only formed an intercollegiatetraining system boasting the potential of popularization and replication for students in civil engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, and other fields, but also established a talent training mode encompassing undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral studies, including double degrees, semester exchange, cooperative scientific research, and engineering project practice. In addition, they continuously improved the operation mechanism of multilateral cooperation and support system, which has been highly recognized by the Ministries of Education of China, Japan and the ROK. In CAMPUS Asia Mode 3, participating countries have expanded from the three countries of China, Japan, and the ROK to five. The participation of Nanyang Technological University and National University of Laos has brought more opportunities fortraining international talents in their regions. It is hoped that the five universities can leverage their respective advantages, build a collaborative international scientific research platform to tackle the urgent problems regarding complex engineering of infrastructure construction and maintenance in the said countries, and cultivate top engineers and scientists for the sustainable development of Asia and the world.

Ito Masako, Director of Nagasaki University, Kyung Soo Jun, Dean of the Graduate School of Water Resources of Sungkyunkwan University, heads of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Nanyang Technological University,heads of the Department of Civil Engineering of National University of Laos, as well as relevant heads and professor representatives of the Department of International Affairs, the School of Civil Engineering, and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Shandong University attended the meeting and delivered speeches.

At the round table held in the afternoon, representatives from the five universities thoroughly discussed the work plan of CAMPUS Asia Mode 3, going into great detail of the five-year agenda, double degrees, short-term mixed exchange projects, cooperation agreements, and memorandums of understanding of the five universities, further clarifying priorities of the year.

CAMPUS Asia is a high-end program for educational cooperation driven by governments of China, Japan, and the ROK. In 2016, Shandong University, together with Nagasaki University and Sungkyunkwan University, received the approval for Mode 2 of the “China-Japan-ROK Cooperative Project for Nurturing Top Engineers in Infrastructure Construction.” In 2021, the “Asia Intercollegiate Cooperative Project for Nurturing Global Leaders in Sustainable Infrastructure Development” jointly applied by Shandong University, Nagasaki University, Sungkyunkwan University, Nanyang Technological University, and National University of Laos was also successfully selected into Mode 3. The five-year project will be mainly led by the School of Civil Engineering, the School of Qilu Transportation, and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Shandong University.
