Faculty and Students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Participate in the 25th  “CAMPUS Asia” CSS-EEST Symposium

Faculty and students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University actively participated in the 25th  “CAMPUS Asia” CSS-EEST (Cross Strait Symposium on Energy and Environmental Science and Technology) held in Fukuoka, Japan from November 19 to 22, 2023. This international symposium was hosted by Kyushu University in Japan and co-organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, Pusan National University in South Korea, and the University of Technology in Malaysia. Over 30 professors and more than 80 postgraduates and Ph.D. candidates from four Asian universities attended the event, focusing on the themes of energy, environment, materials, and chemical engineering.

During the opening ceremony, Professor He Yiliang, Vice Dean of the China-UK Low Carbon College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered a keynote speech. Top Ph.D. candidates from various disciplines, such as environmental science, mechanical engineering, materials, chemical engineering, and low carbon studies, also presented their research findings.

Centered around the theme of “energy, environment, and materials,” the symposium aimed to promote in-depth discussions on the sustainable development of energy and environment, a significant issue faced by humanity, within the framework of the mechanism for exchange among faculty and students of China, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. This event enhanced mutual trust, tolerance, understanding, and respect among teachers and students of the four countries, promoting openness and cooperation among universities in the region.

Professors from relevant fields participated in the Symposium’s Standing Committee meeting to discuss the format of the next session and advance cooperation on joint dual-degree programs for postgraduates. Professor Jiang Zhi from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Liu Ping from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Professor He Yiliang from the China-UK Low Carbon College, and Professor Hang Tao from the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University were invited to participate in the symposium as experts in their respective fields.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Thu Kyaw from Kyushu University in Japan. Notable speakers included Wang Qian, program leader of “CAMPUS Asia” and Director of the Graduate School’s International Affairs Office at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor Ohtaki Michitaka, Vice Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at Kyushu University, Professor Lee Donggeun, program leader of “CAMPUS Asia” at Pusan National University in South Korea, and Mat Yajid, Associate Professor and Vice Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Technology in Malaysia.

Professor He Yiliang of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Associate Professor Chanho Moon of Kyushu University, Professor Ji Hwan Jeong of Pusan National University, and Associate Professor Mat Yajid of the University of Technology, delivered keynote speeches in their respective fields. These speeches touched on environmental fate and the impact mechanism of antibiotics, experimental research on nonlinear dynamics of plasma turbulence, the positive ecological impact of heat pump technology, and the research progress of silica aerogel insulation materials, among others. They also actively answered questions on-site and interacted with the audience.

The symposium featured three sub-venues focusing on energy, environment, and materials. Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Ph.D. candidates delivered impressive academic presentations, sparking discussions and exchanges with their fellow students. A total of 71 students from four countries presented their research, accompanied by an engaging poster display that attracted participants for in-depth discussions.

At the closing ceremony, Han Donglin, a Ph.D. candidate from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was bestowed the Best Presentation Award for his paper on “Molecular scale regulation for entropy and thermal conductivity of electrocaloric polymers.” His paper will be recommended for publication in EVERGREEN (the Joint Journal of Novel Carbon Resource Sciences & Green Asia Strategy).

The evolution of human ecological civilization and sustainable development worldwide cannot be achieved without the support from disciplines such as energy, environment, and materials studies. In that regard, this symposium is of great significance for building cooperation among universities in the Asia Pacific region and for broadening our students’ international perspectives. Experts from the four institutions shared their experiences and sought common ground, playing an important role in discipline development and talent exchange among Asian universities and in realizing new insights for the sustainable development of society as a whole.
