Our School Facilitates Practical Learning in Tianjin for Students in PKU-Waseda Double Degree and CAMPUS Asia Programs

On October 28, 2023, teachers and students from the “Peking University-Waseda University Undergraduate Double Degree Program” (referred to as “PKU-Waseda Double Degree Program”) and “CAMPUS Asia” Program visited Tianjin for practice and study. The delegation, led by Associate Professor Dong Zhaohua, Vice Dean of the School, included Assistant Professor Chen Muyang, Director of the PKU-Waseda Double Degree Program, Xu Jianchun, Undergraduate Academic Affairs Officer, and Chen Fang from the  Office for International Programs. Nearly 20 Chinese and international students from the PKU-Waseda Double Degree Program and CAMPUS Asia Program participated in the event.

Tianjin, as northern China’s largest port city, a strategic hub for international shipping, a national center for advanced manufacturing and R&D, and a significant intersection point for the “Belt and Road” Initiative, boasts advantages such as a strategic geographical location, a rich industrial history, and a hub for cultivating high-tech talent. The city has established the first civil aircraft production line outside Europe for Airbus, contributing to Tianjin becoming the fourth city globally, following Seattle in the United States, Toulouse in France, and Hamburg in Germany, to possess a large aircraft assembly line. The visiting delegation had the opportunity to visit the Airbus A320 final assembly line in the morning, and they marveled at the rapid progress of China’s aviation industry.

In the afternoon, the group visited the former residence of Huang Rongliang, a modern Chinese diplomat, known as the “Porcelain House.” Designated as a key protected historical building by the Tianjin Municipal Government, the Porcelain House is constructed from over 700 million ancient porcelain pieces, including ceramics from official and private kilns of various dynasties: the celadon of the Jin Dynasty; the tri-color glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty; the Jun porcelain of the Song Dynasty; blue-and-white porcelain of the Yuan and Ming dynasties; and the famille rose porcelain of the Qing Dynasty. It is often referred to as the “China Ancient Porcelain Museum.” Subsequently, the delegation explored Tianjin Ancient Culture Street, immersing themselves in various local folk customs and tangible cultural artifacts that embody the “ancient flavor” of Tianjin. This experience gave them a friendly understanding of Tianjin’s historical heritage and traditional culture.

This event deepened the group’s understanding of Tianjin’s history, culture, and social development among Chinese and international students. It also enhanced their awareness of China’s national conditions and helped them acquire true knowledge and friendship through cross-cultural exchanges.

The PKU-Waseda Double Degree Program is an international exchange initiative established under an academic cooperation agreement signed between our School and Waseda University in 2003.

The CAMPUS Asia Program is a government-led initiative involving student exchanges among China, Japan, and South Korea. Under this framework, our School collaborates with Waseda University, Korea University, and Nanyang Technological University at the undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level, collaboration extends to the University of Tokyo, Seoul National University, and National University of Singapore, encompassing degree programs and exchange initiatives.
