On July 11 and 12,2022, the Beijing Normal University (BNU) Summer School 2022 (BNUSS 2022): Theory and Methods of Land Surface Remote Sensing Inversion, sponsored by BNU and organized by the Faculty of Geographical Science, BNU, was successfully held. This program was open to partner universities of the “International Collaborative Human Resources Development Program in Asia to Foster Inclusive Minds” of CAMPUS Asia.

The BNUSS 2022 was held online, with a total of 2,434 trainees from 381 universities, 107 research institutes, 64 public institutions, and 29 high-tech enterprises around the world registering for the program. Among the trainees, 2,384 came from 34 various provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and special administrative regions of China, while the other 50 were international students and researchers from 20 countries, including the US, the UK, Australia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ecuador, Nepal, and Japan.

The program, livestreamed on Bilibili and CNKI, drew widespread attention from scholars, students, and professionals in related fields across the globe and was well-received with many compliments. The program livestream was watched by more than 2,400 people on Bilibili in a single day, ranking at the forefront of the “Livestream Learning — Science & Technology” sector.

This is the seventhEnglish summer school on quantitative remote sensing held by BNU (co-held with the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society [GRSS], member of the Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers [IEEE] from 2016 to 2021), and the first international summer school independently organized by BNU. Themed “Theory and Methods of Land Surface Remote Sensing Inversion,” the program offered eight English thematic reports, covering such areas as the optical remote sensing model,DART model, LESS model, modeling of 3D forests using lidar data, remote sensing of surface urban heat islands, and remote sensing of land surface phenology. Renowned experts at home and abroad gave lectures online, including LIU Qinhuo from the Aerospace Information Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, LI Wenkai from Sun Yat-sen University, QI Jianbo from Beijing Forestry University, Jean-Philippe Gastellu-Etchegorry from the Paul Sabatier University-Toulouse III, SONG Conghe from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, ZHANG Xiaoyang from the South Dakota State University, JU Weimin from Nanjing University, and ZENGYelu fromChina Agricultural University. The program provided a platform for trainees to comprehensively understand and apply quantitative remote sensing research results and keep up with academic frontiers, effectively promoting international exchanges and application of the research results of relevant disciplines.

Online lectures

The reportsoffered during the summer school were substantial in content. Both Chinese and foreign trainees paid great attention to the lectures and participated actively in Q&A, whileteachers provided in-depth course instruction and answered questions with patience, which created a lively learning atmosphere. Having enjoyed a wonderful academic feast and benefited a lot, the students gave high ratings to the BNUSS 2022, which was also shown in the questionnaire results.
