According to the recent announcement by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, ZHU Huiling, an undergraduate student at the School of Public Administration, was granted “2021 Guangdong University Student of the Year,” and CHENG Yu, a graduate student of the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture and Faculty of Asian and African Students (under preparation), received the Finalist Award of “2021 Guangdong University Student of the Year.”

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) has always valued the ideological and political education of students. Focusing on the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, the construction of the “system of student education in ten major areas,” and the efforts in providing “three-wide education” (educate all members during the whole process and in all aspects), GDUFS has continuously taken targeted measures to improve the effectiveness of ideological and political education of students. We also encourage students to learn from role models and strive to become one. All these serve to contribute wisdom and strength to building GDUFS into a high-class higher institution that has both the university itself and its disciplines included in the “double world-class project.”

ZHU Huiling, female, born in 1997, is a probationary member of the Communist Party of China (CPC). She is also a member of GDUFS Language Service Volunteers and a volunteer for COVID-19 containment. In 2020, ZHU participated in the voluntary program “Social Worker in School” for Guangdong’s university students, working as social workers in the schools of China’s underdeveloped areas. She was awarded the titles of “Guangdong Five-Star Volunteer,” “Guangdong Positive and Kind Youth,” and “Outstanding Individual Award of the 13th China Young Volunteer”.

In April 2020, as a young volunteer of the COVID-19 containment team in the Haizhu District, Guangzhou, ZHU leveraged her advantage in foreign language studies to participate in the work of guarding against inbound infections in key areas such as hotels and airports. She provided translation services for inbound travelers with great patience, kept clear and thorough records of relevant data, and helped ease the travelers’ emotions in a heart-warming manner, which received high remarks from the public and relevant workers. From August 2020 to July 2021, she once again responded to the national call and took a year off from school to participate in the “Social Worker in School” voluntary program. By bringing into play professional strength, she worked to provide professional in-school services and psychological support for children living in rural areas, including courses on children’s sexuality education, care for vulnerable groups, life education, and so on. She stayed in Beijie Town of Maoming City for over 300 days. During her stay in the town, ZHU helped rebuild six libraries in rural primary schools, organized more than 30 activities for left-behind children, and taught more than 100 courses on children’s growth. She has filmed nearly 100 short videos and received over 100,000 views online. She devoted over 1,500 hours to volunteer services, which directly benefited more than 30,000 people.

CHENG Yu, female, member of the Communist Youth League, is an undergraduate student in the 2019 GDUFS CAMPUS Asia program. Excelling in academic studies and language capacities, she also demonstrates great creativity and a sense of responsibility as a young adult. During her study at GDUFS, she studied at Ritsumeikan University in Japan and Dongseo University in the Republic of Korea (ROK) for two years as an exchange student, where she learned Japanese, Korean, and English at the same time. She ranked first in academic studies for two consecutive years, for which she was awarded the National Scholarship in 2021. Paying great attention to the ancient courier routes in southern Guangdong Province, CHENG has been devoting herself to cultural dissemination and won the Bronze Award in China International College Students’ “Internet Plus” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. As a core member, she participated in the “2021 International Communication Capacity Building Project” and pursued sci-tech innovations with teachers and other students. Under the project, they produced a series of delicate promotions for “Stories of COVID-19 Containment” to convey China’s spirits and tell the story of China, helping build a bridge for better communication between Chinese and overseas students. The work has received great popularity.
